Wearables for Sensory Communication
Hong Z. Tan
(Purdue University, USA)
Abstract: Evidence for successful speech communication through the sense of touch is provided by the natural methods of tactual communication that have been used for decades by persons with profound auditory and visual impairments. However, there are still currently no wearable devices that can support speech communication effectively without extensive learning. What does it take to realize the potential of speech communication through touch that has been demonstrated by an extensive body of research? Let’s discuss the challenges and opportunities for developing wearables for sensory communication. I will also share our current efforts in developing a wearable haptic speech communication system.
