Message from the Chairs
The papers in this volume were presented in Montreal, Quebec, Canada at the Forty-Ninth Annual ACM Symposium on Theory of Computing (STOC 2017), sponsored by the ACM Special Interest Group on Algorithms and Computation Theory (SIGACT). The papers were given as both talks and posters during the first four days of a five-day Theory Fest, which was held on Monday through Friday, June 19-23, 2017. Monday's program included tutorials. On Tuesday and Thursday there were two evening poster sessions for other contributed posters as well as STOC papers. A panel discussion on the future of theoretical computer science was held on Wednesday, as was the Knuth Prize presentation and lecture. Workshops were held on Friday. During the week, there were invited talks on previously published work and keynote talks, whose titles and short abstracts are included in this volume.
In response to a Call for Papers, 422 submissions to STOC were received by the submission deadline of November 2, 2016. The Program Committee deliberations continued electronically until the in-person meeting at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada on February 4 - 5, 2017, where final decisions were made. The Program Committee meeting was attended by 23 of the 25 of its members. They selected 103 papers for presentation; one pair was merged for this volume and two pairs were merged for the talks.
